On April 15th, the 19-year-old former employee of the FedEx facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, shot and killed eight people with an assault-style weapon. The weapons were purchased legally even after the gunman’s mother had contacted authorities about his mental health in March of last year and confiscated a shotgun.
Incidents like this highlight serious failures to even utilize the laws that are currently on the books. Indiana has red flag laws that the police department seemingly failed to implement. Authorities are still looking into this matter, and we should wait till the conclusion of the investigation to cast judgment.
This writer is against red flag laws as they stand today because of things like this. They do not solve the problem; whether it’s a failure in procedure or buying an illegal gun, the laws do little if anything to stop people from committing crimes like this. It is this writers’ opinion that it’s better to have good people who are highly trained to protect against evil people with guns or any other weapon.
